class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Agua Salud es una plataforma experimental dise\u00f1ada para estudiar los servicios ecosist\u00e9micos proporcionados por los bosques tropicales y c\u00f3mo cambian con el uso de la tierra y los cambios ambientales. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-d5403316fc719e32b64b7bcf95f8b00d class=\"has-small-font-size\">Establecido en el a\u00f1o 2008 y bautizado con el nombre del r\u00edo Agua Salud, el experimento abarca 700 hect\u00e1reas (poco m\u00e1s de mil canchas de f\u00fatbol) en la cuenca del Canal de Panam\u00e1, para cuantificar los bienes y beneficios sociales derivados del paisaje y realizar investigaciones destinadas a comprender los procesos ecol\u00f3gicos.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Este conocimiento es necesario para producir la pr\u00f3xima generaci\u00f3n de modelos que predigan la prestaci\u00f3n de estos servicios ecol\u00f3gicos, wp-elements-a784ec051fbc8509c4be13b118bc500e\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700;line-height:1.6\">Vastas \u00e1reas de bosque tropical han sido taladas en las Am\u00e9ricas para la producci\u00f3n ganadera, incluyendo los bosques de la cuenca del Canal de Panam\u00e1.\u202f Pero \u00bfa qu\u00e9 precio? \u00bfEs esta la mejor manera de gestionar la tierra en el presente?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-small-font-size\">Los investigadores de Agua Salud instrumentaron 13 cuencas hidrogr\u00e1ficas diferentes y plantaron 150,000 \u00e1rboles en distintos experimentos; se plantaron especies de \u00e1rboles nativos en monocultivos y mezclados para comprender el efecto de la diversidad en el crecimiento, compar\u00e1ndolos con las plantaciones de teca (<em>Tectona grandis<\/em>) y con los bosques en regeneraci\u00f3n natural.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-small-font-size\">Esto permite a los investigadores evaluar la regulaci\u00f3n del caudal de los arroyos y la restauraci\u00f3n de la calidad del agua, as\u00ed como qu\u00e9 usos del suelo absorben mejor el di\u00f3xido de carbono y protegen la biodiversidad. El agua de lluvia que no regresa a la atm\u00f3sfera a trav\u00e9s de la evapotranspiraci\u00f3n llega a los arroyos y r\u00edos que desembocan en el Canal de Panam\u00e1. El agua dulce no solo impulsa el Canal, sino que tambi\u00e9n es la principal fuente de agua potable para la Ciudad de Panam\u00e1 y otras \u00e1reas urbanas y rurales dentro y alrededor de la
