Welcome to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Archaeology Website! Our mission is to better understand the role humans have played in the tropics, and the complex interactions that occur between humans and the environment today. From the earliest Paleoamerican hunters, to the advent of agriculture several thousand years ago, to historic and modern adaptations to changing landscapes, we study all aspects of humans and their means of adapting to tropical environments.
