The first half of 2023 has been a hectic time! Many researchers, new and old, have come to visit the STRI Archaeology Labs. Here are some of the activities that are happening:

STRI Research Associate Tomás Mendizábal has been directing recent excavations at the San Lorenzo Fort at the mouth of the Chagres River. The project has discovered some of the historic community around the fort, and has been learning more about how the fort was modified over time. STRI curator Nicole Smith-Guzmán and archaeologists Aureliano Valencia and Alexandra Lara are working on rearranging the lab. We are working on making an electronic database of everything in the collection.

Máximo Jiménez (STRI zooarchaeologist) is analyzing a large set of animal bones from the Selin Farm archaeological site in northern Honduras. The fish from the site can tell us whether conditions in a saltwater lagoon nearby may have been different in the past.

Veronica Pace is an intern working with Nicole Smith-Guzmán in the bioarchaeology section of the lab. She has been assisting Smith-Guzmán in the lab excavation of a block-cut burial from Jicarita, and completing the Cerro Juan Díaz human remains analysis process. This hands-on experience is providing her with the critical bioarchaeological foundation for her future plans of pursuing a PhD in Panamanian bioarchaeology.

Upstairs in the Naos lab, Jon Cybulski (STRI Tupper postdoc fellow) and Jennifer Leichliter (Max Planck postdoc fellow) work on selecting deer and iguana bones to examine for isotopes. They are using new techniques that will improve how we understand connections between humans and animals in tropical food webs.
Arriba en el laboratorio de Naos, Jon Cybulski (STRI Tupper postdoc fellow) y Jennifer Leichliter (Max Planck postdoc fellow) trabajan en la selección de huesos de venados e iguanas para un análisis de isótopos. Están utilizando nuevas técnicas que mejorarán la forma en que entendemos las conexiones entre humanos y animales en las redes alimentarias tropicales.
At the Ancon labs, Irene Holst (STRI archaeobotanist) identifies starch grains and phytoliths from ancient plant residues. She is studying the ancient vegetation around the archaeological site of Altar de Sacrificios, along the Guatemala/Mexican border.
En los laboratorios de Ancón, Irene Holst (arqueobotanista de STRI) identifica granos de almidón y fitolitos de residuos de plantas antiguas. Ella estudia la vegetación antigua alrededor del sitio arqueológico de Altar de Sacrificios, en la frontera entre Guatemala y México.
Sergio Castro (STRI intern) classifies a huge number (>100,000 specimens!) of animal bones and shells from the Don Bernardo Beach excavations on Pedro Gonzalez Island. Many of these remains come from a midden (trash deposit) that dates to 6,000 years ago!

Carly Pope (STRI/Fulbright fellow) examines the composition of broken ceramic vessels under a special polarized microscope. She is also using a pXRF to analyze chemical composition of the vessels. Her goal is to track ancient sources of manufacture and trade throughout Panama and Costa Rica.

Raiza Erlenbaugh (STRI fellow) takes photos of restored ceramic vessels from Cerro Juan Díaz, a Pre-Columbian archaeological site in central Panama. She has been working several months on creating a guidebook on the chronology of vessel styles in central Panama.

Yahaira Núñez-Cortés (STRI Tupper postdoc fellow) will officially start in August of 2023. She came to visit STRI briefly in April to prepare for her project, which will involve a combined isotopic and dental calculus study of human individuals from Costa Rica and Panama. She is currently in Costa Rica, conducting field excavations and getting ready to test soil and water across the country to establish regional isotope baselines.
Yahaira Núñez-Cortés (STRI Tupper postdoc fellow) comenzará oficialmente en agosto de 2023. Ella visitó a STRI brevemente en abril para preparar para su proyecto, que incluirá un estudio combinado de los isótopos y cálculo dental de individuos humanos de Costa Rica y Panamá. Actualmente se encuentra en Costa Rica, realizando excavaciones de campo y preparándose para analizar el suelo y el agua en todo el país para establecer líneas de base de isótopos regionales.
