\"\"Aureliano Valencia taught a month-long workshop on how to reconstruct ancient ceramic vessels from broken pottery sherds. Most ceramic objects archaeologists find have been in the ground a long time, and are broken and scattered remains of discarded pots, dishes, and bowls. Conservation and reconstruction of vessels requires special training and lots of patience, but reconstructing vessels can tell us a lot about the objects people used in their daily lives.<\/p>\n

\"\"Aureliano Valencia ense\u00f1\u00f3 un taller durante marzo sobre c\u00f3mo reconstruir antiguos vasijas de cer\u00e1mica de tiestos fragmentados. La mayor\u00eda de los objetos cer\u00e1micos que encuentran los arque\u00f3logos han estado en el suelo durante mucho tiempo, y son restos rotos y dispersos de ollas, platos y vasijas desechados. \"\"In March, Veronica Pace gave a presentation at a CIHAC-AIP conference on her recent work using isotopes to understand the age of weaning among children in ancient Panama. Weaning ages differ among different cultures for many reasons. They can also affect the health of a child into adulthood, and therefore are important for understanding the health of a community as a whole.<\/p>\n

Olga began her research in the 1960s in Chiriqu\u00ed, where she was from, and her archaeological research in western Panama remains some of the most thorough for that region.<\/p>\n

Panama has had a long and complex history of diverse music, particularly in the last 100 years as it became a central hub not just for trade, but also ideas and cultural trends.<\/p>\n

\"\"Yahaira N\u00fa\u00f1ez Cort\u00e9s and Mystella Pastor have been working on an analysis of starch grains and isotopes from dental calculus and human teeth to determine ancient diets across Costa Rica and Panama. Yahaira has also been analyzing water samples from rivers in both countries to create an isotope baseline map for the region.<\/p>\n

\"\"At the same time, archaeobotanist Irene Holst has been analyzing dog dental calculus from archaeological sites in Guatemala to understand what they may have been eating. Some domestic dogs have a surprising amount of calculus on their teeth, including even cavities! We believe they were mostly eating \u201chuman\u201d food, including maize.<\/p>\n
