We\u2019ll share current research, discuss bat sensory and cognitive adaptations, and talk about bats\u2019 diverse range of social systems and foraging ecologies, and the critical roles bats play in maintaining balanced ecosystems. You\u2019ll have the opportunity to join us in the adjacent rainforest to see how we untangle bats from mistnets, and visit STRI\u2019s Gamboa Laboratory, where we\u2019ll take a look at a variety of different bat species up close. We will have a small shuttle running back and forth between the Gamboa Rainforest Resort and the Gamboa Laboratory during this time. For those who prefer to walk, it\u2019s a 20 min walk from the Gamboa Rainforest Resort to the Gamboa Laboratory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Attire<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please wear close-toed shoes and long pants, and bring a headlight or some other type of light if you have one (the light on your cell phone is also fine). You\u2019ll have the option to join us in the forest to see how we untangle bats from mistnets. But if you don\u2019t want to join the forest part, we\u2019ll also bring all the bats we capture back to the lab so you can see them up close (and take slow motion videos of them in flight as we release them!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More about the Smithsonian Bat Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Smithsonian Bat Lab is a group of researchers from all over the world who come together to study bats in the forests around Barro Colorado Island, Soberan\u00eda National Park, and beyond. The group is led by STRI staff scientist Rachel Page (<a href=\"mailto:PageR@si.edu\">PageR@si.edu<\/a>) and Bat Lab manager, Gregg Cohen (<a href=\"mailto:coheng@si.edu\">coheng@si.edu<\/a>). At the BCI100 Bat Night, we\u2019ll have bat books, bat t-shirts and bat stickers for sale, with all proceeds going to the Kalko Fellowship to fund the next generation of bat researchers in the tropics.
