Desde 1959, los cient\u00edficos estudian los ecosistemas costeros tropicales: Los manglares, los arrecifes de coral y los pastos marinos. Tradicionalmente, a los manglares se les ha considerado como lugares malsanos, f\u00e9tidos, repletos de insectos y sin valor alguno. Pero est\u00e1 apreciaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 cambiando gracias a las investigaciones que se vienen realizando durante las \u00faltimas cinco d\u00e9cadas.
