Join Us

We are thrilled to welcome individuals interested in joining our diverse and inclusive laboratory for research in Panama. There are several ways to join our laboratory as an intern or a fellow that are detailed on the Institute’s Academic Programs webpage but here is a general overview.

Internships are a great way to gain hands-on experience in our laboratory and contribute to our ongoing research projects. Internships are typically for undergraduate students, recent graduates and beginning graduate students. There are three types of internships:

Internships

Competitive internship program

Apply for the “STRI General Internship Program” that funds students to join existing projects. The list of existing projects can be found on the bulletin board. Deadlines for application submission are February 15 and September 15 of each year. Duration of the internship is 3 months with a stipend of $1,250/month. Applications must include a CV, a two-to-three-page essay, transcripts from your current and previous institutions and two letters of reference but see detailed guidelines here.

External project funds

We regularly have funded projects that can support interns. These projects may have specific requirements or qualifications and may be advertised on the Institute’s website or on the lab’s social media accounts (@marine.ecology.panama).

Self sponsored internships

If you have access to other sources of funding you may choose to self-sponsor your internship in the lab.

If you are interested in joining our lab as an intern, please contact our lab with a description of your research interests, your CV and the names of one or two references.

Fellowships

Fellowships are for more advanced students/researchers who wish to conduct independent research within our lab. There are three broad types of fellowships available:

Short Term Fellowships

They typically support graduate students to conduct research for three months at STRI. This fellowship is ideal for students who are looking to conduct part of their thesis research in Panama and collaborate with our lab. Deadlines for application submission are February 15, June 15 and October 15 of each year. Applications must include a research proposal with a narrative of no more than 1,500 words (general introduction, methodology, and expected results), a timetable, a budget and budget justification, a CV, a diversity statement and two letters of reference but see detailed guidelines here.

Pre-doctoral fellowships

They support PhD candidates to conduct a significant portion of their research at STRI. There are two options for pre-doctoral fellowships:
