Our discoveries often take place when experts in little-known groups of animals or plants visit places where no one with their expertise has gone before.
As experts retire, they are often not replaced. It’s easier for universities to find funding for research involving new technologies.
The Smithsonian’s Tropical Taxonomy Training Program at the Bocas del Toro Research Station, brings together seasoned experts and students from some of the most biodiverse nations on Earth. In addition to building collaborations, we create and pass on new tools, such as our “How To” video series, which makes it possible for students everywhere to id marine invertebrates.
We need your help to sponsor students and instructors and to pay for their travel and lodging as they contribute, not only to cataloging existing biodiversity, but to understanding these organisms and what it will take to guarantee their survival.
Who knows?! A new species may soon bear your name!
